DONE WITH MIXING!!

Well, “I’m going to post again in a few days” turned into a couple months. Oops. :)

This record has ended up giving me opportunities I never thought I would have. For instance I never thought I would write a solo cello part for a song. MYSELF! I also never thought I’d end up writing duo clarinet and accordion parts in the studio with the talented people who played them. It never occurred to me that it was possible for guitarist Tim Young to complement MY guitar playing.

So I’ve been really humbled and honored by this whole process. The little (and some not so little) surprises end up making everything so wonderfully memorable. Things didn’t go exactly as planned, but in many cases the outcome was beyond my expectations.

Mixing is complete! Ryan Hadlock worked very hard on these mixes, and we are both really proud of them. When it came time for the 5 days we booked to do the mixing we still had a lead vocal and ALL the background vocals to record, plus that solo cello part. So it was quite fun to whip out ALL of those vocals in a day and get going on mixing! It really felt like a marathon. I was actually thrilled because background vocals are my favorite thing to do in the studio. :)

Now comes time to cut the few songs I need to cut in order to make this record not ridiculously long. This is really hard. So the guys and I (Cody and Dave) are going to sit down with a beer later on today and really get into it.

Then there is mastering, photography, graphics, and pressing. Not to mention promoting this thing too. So recording my Sophomore album is complete, but we’ve got a long way to go on it still. As hard as this has been for me I have not lost my excitement for it for a moment. I hope you can hear that when you listen to it. Whenever that ends up being! ;)

The next post will be more fun recording stories. Talk to ya soon.
